How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture improves local blood circulation by inserting sterile needles at different points to relieve pain and recover health.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, our health is dependent on qi, the body's motivating energy, and blood, the body's vital nutrient substance. There are many issues that can affect qi and blood flows including physical, mental and emotional factors. These issues can include anxiety, stress, anger, fear, grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma.
When fine needles are inserted into special points through the skin during acupuncture treatments, the flows of qi and blood are encouraged. This leads to the body's own healing response being triggered, resulting in your body being restored to its natural balance.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a heat treatment where burning moxa (a Chinese herb) is used to produce heat stimulation on specific points of the body. This traditional treatment improves blood flow and strengthens the immune system, helping to both treat and prevent illnesses.
Why does cupping therapy produce a slight bruise?
Cupping therapy uses suction on the skin to increase blood circulation. Suction is created using fire or a special device. Cupping therapy often produces a slight bruising on the skin, which indicates that the blood flow in the localised area has improved and you will experience increased blood flow for a prolonged period of time. After a few days the mark left by the cupping treatment will disappear.
Chinese herbal medicine
Chinese herbal medicine uses different plants to promote health and treat illnesses. In Chinese medicine, different parts of the plants are used in three different forms: decocting pieces, concentrated granules and patent formulae.
Chinese herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years. According to the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, your doctor will decide which herbs will be best for you after diagnosing your problem through inspection (looking), auscultation (listening), inquiring (asking) and palpation (touching). Your tongue and your pulse will also be checked.
All Chinese herbs have specific purposes, some can improve immune and endocrine (e.g. hormone) systems; others can strengthen blood circulation, relieve inflammation and correct existing body imbalances.
Tuina
Tuina is a therapeutic massage that has been developed according to the theories and principals of traditional Chinese medicine. Tuina is stronger than normal massage and corresponding herb oils are chosen depending on what is being treated. Tuina can be used on the neck, back and the whole body to relieve stress or for relaxation.
